Rancho Penasquitos (92129) or PQ for short, is a suburban community located in the northeastern part of San Diego county that is north of Mira Mesa and west of interstate 15, with state route 56 traversing east to west through the central portion of the community. Approximately half of the space is designated for residential development, one third of PQ is designated for parks and open space including the prominent feature of Black Mountain which rises to an elevation of 1,500 feet, and about 2% for commercial.

The community of Rancho Penasquitos is part of the Poway Unified School District. PUSD is one of the top rated school districts in San Diego county and is home to many ranked K through 12 schools including the two community high schools of Mt. Carmel High School and Westview High School.
